What is an ATP (authorized treating physician)?

The authorized treating physician, or ATP, is the physician who is primarily responsible for managing the medical treatment for your work injury.

Upon reporting an injury to your employer, you should be shown the employer’s posted “panel of physicians.” This is a list of doctors that the employer and insurance company have pre-selected to provide treatment for various work injuries. You have the right to choose any doctor from this list to treat you. If you are not shown a panel of doctors after reporting your work accident, then you have the right to treat with any doctor of your choosing.

All reasonable and related medical treatment from the ATP is usually “authorized” and paid for by the employer/insurer.
